Jamaica, VA – To say the excitement level for the much anticipated 2008 season at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway is at an all time high would be an understatement. Preparations are currently underway for the start of the 2008 season and the first ever visit by the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series to the ½ mile speed plant in the State of Virginia, scheduled for Saturday May 24th.

The speedway has undertaken several new construction projects in preparation of the 2008 season. All will enhance the racing experience for our fans and competitors. The new Paul Sawyer Tower has been completed and will provide 1500 new executive type seats featuring an expanded seat area and armrests.

“We built the new Paul Sawyer Tower in response to the increased fan interest we have received with the addition of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series date in May. They will serve as our reserved seating area for all our big shows in 2008,” commented Track Owner Bill Sawyer.

The speedway has also started the process of laying down a new racing surface, as the first of some 400 truck loads of new clay are now being spread over the ½ mile surface.

“It’s been over three years since we put any new dirt down, over the last two years track records in every division have fallen and we expect with the new clay that is be laid down that the track will provide even more two and three wide racing at even faster speeds,” commented Track General Manager Clarke Sawyer.

Also slated for completion, before the start of the 2008 season, will be a new scoreboard dedicated to the pit side grandstands.

“Our competitors and their families will now have access to lap times, laps and the top five positions on the track, they asked, we listened,” added Sawyer.

The tentative 2008 schedule has been released and includes 25 weeks of Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship action starting with opening night March 29th and ending September 20th with the 39th Annual Fall Classic.

The Speedway will hold two open practices for all divisions on Saturday, March 15th and March 22nd from 9am till 5pm. All cars must be registered and inspected before they will be allowed to practice. Competitors are encouraged to register before the open practice.

Registrations are currently being accepted with the top twenty in each class having their number saved until February 1st when all numbers will become first come first served. Competitors can obtain a 2008 registration form by going to the tracks website or by calling the speedway Monday through Friday 10am through 3pm at (804) 758-1867.
