Mother Nature Takes Miss Utility Summer Sizzler
Jamaica, VA – With 43 of the region’s top super late model drivers in attendance it looked as if the Miss Utility Summer Sizzler was going to create a lot of heat on the race track. With qualifying and two of the four scheduled heats in the book heavy rains and lightning descended on the track forcing officials of Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway to cancel the rest of the evening’s program.
43 super late models took time in AlturnaMATS® Time Trials with defending Champion Jason Covert of York Haven, PA setting fast time.
In the first heat Jeremy Miller of Gettysburg, PA and Covert battled it out for all ten laps with Miller coming out on top with the heat race victory. On lap 2 of the heat Tony Lombardi of Warren, OH took a wild ride down the backstretch, flipping end over end after making contact with Ron Delano Jr. of Stoystown, PA.
In the second heat race Roland Mann of jumped out to a substantial lead at the drop of the green as Josh Richards of Shinnston, WV and Brent Robinson of Smithfield, VA battled for second. Once Richards wrestled second away from Robinson he set out to catch Mann. With two laps remaining Richards caught and pulled to the inside of Mann in turn 2. The two raced side by side to the checkers with Mann holding off Richards by inches at the strip for the heat race win.
The Budweiser Modifieds saw 27 cars take hot lap qualifying with Brandon Galloway of Gloucester, VA taking fast time honors over defending Champion Bret Hamilton of Powhatan, VA.
