Speedway Closes Out 2008 Season With Awards Banquet

Jamaica, VA - Bill Sawyers Virginia Motor Speedway wrapped up the 2008 season this past weekend, with a festive awards gala held this past Saturday evening at the Virginia Beach Convention Center in Virginia Beach, VA.
The top ten in each of the track’s divisions were recognized with special attention reserved for the 2008 champions. Walker Arthur of Forest, VA was honored as the Victory Lap Late Model Champion and received a check for $10,000 for his efforts. Arthur also received a check for $5000 for winning two of the four Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge presented by BB&T events along with an invitation to the Rocket Chassis Race Wise Chassis School and his Championship helmet trophy.
Other Champions honored included Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman; Matt Marshall of Stuarts Draft, VA in the Budweiser Modified division, Daren Bolac of Moyock, NC picked up the New Generation Racing Sprint Car Championship and Bob Terry of Stafford, VA won the inaugural Limited Stock Car Championship. Daren Bolac was also crowned Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Champion and received an additional $2000 for his efforts.
Virginia Motor Speedway’s paid out in points fund for the 2008 season, combined with cash and prizes, and totaled nearly $65,000. Over $49,000 of that total was paid out in cash. For the year, the Speedway paid out a grand total of more than $500,000 in racing purses and points fund awards.
Special achievement award winners for the 2008 season, announced Saturday, included: The Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookies of the Year were Ben Bowie of Brandywine, MD in Victory Lap Late Models; Jimmy Duncan of Fredericksburg, VA in Truckin Thunder Sportsman; Matt Marshall of Stuarts Draft, VA in Budweiser Modifieds, Brent Bordeaux of Fredericksburg, VA in New Generation Racing Sprint Cars and Wayne Suite of Mechanicsville, MD in the Limited Stock Car division. Each winner received a plaque and $250.
The Pitts Lumber Most Popular Driver Awards went to Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA, Victory Lap Late Models; Bruce Wilson of New Kent, VA, Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Brandon Galloway of Gloucester, VA, Budweiser Modifieds; Mary Anne Williams of Chester, VA, New Generation Racing Sprint Cars Mark Wright of Mechanicsville, VA, Limited Stock Car. Each winner received a plaque and $250.
Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway is a 1/2-mile, dirt oval. The track is located on U.S. Route 17, eight miles north of Saluda, VA and 25 miles south of Tappahannock, VA. The speedway is just a short drive from Richmond, Fredericksburg, Southern Maryland and the Hampton Roads area.
