Jamaica, VA – Rain and the forecast for more thunderstorms has forced officials at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway to cancel Truckin Thunder / Collision One / WIGO Championship Night activities for Saturday, September 24th. “This is not the way we wanted to end the season, but we have run out of weekends for the 2011 season. To say we are disappointed would be an understatement, this is the second time we have had to cancel Championship Night,” commented track General Manager Clarke Sawyer. With the rain out the 2011 Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series track championships have been decided. In the Victory Lap Late Model division Scott Adams of Chester, VA wins his second consecutive late model title. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman division Todd Traylor of King William, VA wins his first title. In the Budweiser Modified division Dan Arnold of Petersburg, VA takes home his third consecutive modified title and in the Collision One Limited Stock Cars Wesley Givens of New Kent, VA will get his career first championship by one point. The top ten in each division will be honored at the 2011 Awards Banquet to be held Saturday October 29, 2011 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center in Virginia Beach, VA. Information on the banquet can be found on the speedway website or by calling the speedway offices. The action will now switch to the speedway’s state of the art mud bog facility. On Saturday October 1st The Pit at Virginia Motor Speedway will host the 7th Annual Run-A-Muck Mud Bog and Mud Sling presented by Rappahannock Tractor and the Virginia Army National Guard. Additional sponsorship provided by Davis Off Road, Monster Energy Drinks, NAPA of King William, ORI of Richmond, Collision One and Truckin Thunder. There will be nine classes of “Mud Maniacs” in action ranging from stock to unlimited with cash payouts in all classes. New for this year’s event will be the addition of the Pro Modified class. After discussions with both competitors and fans Pit officials have added the very exciting class to the line up. Rules for the new Pro Modified division are posted on the Pit’s website by next week. Not only will fans get to see hordes of trucks splashing through the 200 foot Mud Bog pit but they will also get the opportunity to see some of the regions best Mud Dragsters covering the 200 foot Mud Sling pit in under three seconds. The event will also include a car crushing monster truck freestyle show and Dennis Anderson and his new creation King Sling will be competing in the Unlimited Bog division; that is if it is still in one piece after he goes off in the Freestyle show he has scheduled! Dennis will also be signing autographs and selling souvenirs. Gates and registration will open at 9am with Single Eliminations for Stock A, B; Modified A, B, C, Unlimited Bog, Pro Modified and X, XX classes beginning at 12 noon.
Jamaica, VA (Courtesy James Essex Lucas Oil Series) – Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, TN took the lead for good on the 24th lap from Steve Francis of Ashland, KY. He went on to win the rain-shortened Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned USA 100 on Sunday afternoon at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway. Bloomquist and Francis staged a terrific race for the lead in the first 24 laps of the race until Bloomquist began to pull away. Rain then hit the track and the main event was halted with 31 laps complete. Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN was third followed by Jimmy Owens of Newport, TN and Jamie Lathroum of Mechanicsville, MD. Francis grabbed the lead at the start with Bloomquist and Steve Shaver in tow. Francis held the lead for most of the race with Bloomquist edging ahead of him on lap seven. Francis quickly charged back by Bloomquist for the lead. The two continued a side-by-side battle with Francis leading the way until lap 24 when Bloomquist passed him exiting turn four in traffic. Bloomquist swiftly put three lapped cars between himself and Francis. Rain started to fall on lap 31, forcing a red-flag. With more precipitation on the way and being past the half-mark, VMS officials and Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series officials decided to call the event with 19 laps remaining out of the scheduled 50. It was Bloomquist’ first ever win at Virginia Motor Speedway as he completed the weekend sweep in Virginia. “It sounds good to win both of these races; we had never won at either of these tracks. We knew we would get one eventually, the car was good all day, it was a little hard to pass in the heat race. The tire set up we chose worked great for getting to the bottom and get something done down there,” said the 47-year-old who captured his 13th series win of the year and the 39th of his career. “Steve (Francis) was running well, he got boxed in some traffic and I was able to get under him. We raced close and clean, we both run Roush-Yates Engines and they were great today. Thanks to the fans for coming out today, it’s a shame the weather didn’t cooperate,” said Bloomquist, who with the win took back over the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Championship Points lead from Owens. Bloomquist drives his own Bloomquist Race Cars Ford sponsored by Base Racing Fuels, Hawkeye Trucking, Sweet Mfg, Miller Brothers Construction, Hoosier Tires, Lane Automotive, Allstar Performance, Dixie Chopper and Ohlins. His win in the Sunday’s USA 100 was the third of his career with his previous victories coming in 1993 and 1994 when the event was held at Beckley (WV) Motor Speedway. Francis in his Valvoline, Harbaugh Amusement, MasterSbilt #15 took second in the final results. “We had a real good car today, we went with the smaller motor thinking the track would slick up some and it did. I tried to hold my line there, if we just could have kept the lead for about five more laps we would’ve won, but once Scott got by me, I knew I was in trouble.”

Marlar in the Bryson Motorsports Rocket claimed third and was happy with his run. “To finish third to these guys, it is quite an accomplishment. We’ll take third and go to the next race, I was just waiting for the final 20 laps, and I felt like we had a car that could’ve won.”

Completing the top ten were John Blankenship of Williamson, WV; Steve Shaver of Vienna, WV; Don O’Neal of Martinsville, IN; Jason Covert of York Haven, PA; and Dan Stone of Thompson, PA.

In preliminary action, Mike Marlar was the Red Buck Cigars fast qualifier among the 32 entrants. The two-25 lap qualifying heat races went to Steve Francis and Marlar. The B-mains were won by Gary Stuhler and Walker Arthur

The 30 Lap feature for the modifieds was rained out and will not be rescheduled. Nick Hoffman of Mooresville, NC set a new track record in qualifying with a lap of 18.988 seconds. Picking up heat race wins were Nick Hoffman, Dave Defibaugh and Dan Arnold. Rich Marks won the B Main.

Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway will return to action this coming Saturday September 24th and host the rescheduled Truckin Thunder, Collision One, WIGO Championship Night.

It will be the last point race of the season for all four of the track’s Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series divisions. With all the divisional point races tight heading into the final weekend the racing should be intense. Throw in the fact that every competitor is also vying for the coveted Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series championship, which will crown an over all track champion, this will be a must see event.

The night’s activities will include the Victory Lap Late Models, Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Budweiser Modifieds and the Collision One Limited Stock Cars in Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series action.

Competitor gates for Saturday, September 24th will open at 4pm with spectator gates opening at 5pm. On track activities will begin at 6:30pm with hot laps.

Jamaica, VA – With the regular season drawing to a close, the battle for points and tempers heated up Saturday on Safety Kleen, NAPA of King William, National Guard Night night at Virginia Motor Speedway. The next to the final night of the 2011 Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series racing season set the table for the championship night on Saturday September 3rd. In what turned out to be one of the best races of the year and in a race that saw five different leaders it was David Williams of Clement, MD that survived the full contact event by taking the lead on lap 28 and going on to record his second win of 2011. “The harder they are to win the sweeter they are when you do get in victory lane, that was about has hard a win as we have ever had, the competition here is so tough so being here in victory lane is that much sweeter,” commented Williams in victory lane. Williams first battled with John Staton of Chesapeake, VA for second with the two trading paint in each corner with Williams taking over that spot on lap 24. Williams then went to work on Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA for the lead. Several times Williams tried to get inside Shelton for the lead only to have the door slammed on him each time. On lap 27 Williams finally got under Shelton out of turn 2 taking the lead he would not relinquish. Williams would have to fend off Staton several times before Staton had to work to hold off Adams who took over second on lap 31. Adams could not mount a challenge for the lead and Williams would take the win followed by Scott Adams, John Staton, Kenny Moreland and Walker Arthur. In other action Travis LaRogue of Mooresville, NC picked up his second Budweiser Modified win in a slugfest. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman Tony Wood of New Kent, VA picked up his first win of the season and in the Collision One Limited Stock Car division Joe Ender of Glen Allen, VA got his first win of the season. In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Travis LaRoque and Lance Grady led the field to green with Grady leading the opening lap. Caution would fly on lap 2 for a wreck in turn 4. On the restart Grady once again pulled away to take control of the lead. With Grady out front the battle was for the second spot with John Ferguson, Travis LaRoque, Brian Maxey and Dan Arnold. Grady would get company in the form of Brian Maxey as the two battled for the top spot. Maxey would try several times to get inside Grady but each time the door was slammed.
A complete restart saw Dan Arnold moved up to the front row and on the drop of the green flag rocketed to the lead.

Arnold began to pull away from Polevoy and Bret Hamilton as they battled for second. Hamilton would get by Polevoy on lap 14 with an outside pass out of turn 4. Hamilton would tangle with lapped traffic two laps later and give the spot back to Polevoy.

Caution would come out on lap 18 for Aaron Harris who came to a stop with front end damage in turn 4. On the restart Hamilton retook the second spot. The car on the move was Maxey who had worked his way back to sixth. Over the next three laps Maxey worked his way to third with great moves out of turn 2 each time.

The races third and last caution came out on lap 22 bunching the field back on Arnold’s bumper for the restart. On the restart Arnold pulled away as Hamilton battled with Maxey for second. Arnold would go on to take his second win of the season and extend his point lead over Maxey in the chase for the championship. Rounding out the top five were Brett Hamilton, Brian Maxey, Page Harrison and Wayne Barricks.

On the restart Childress maintained his lead over the field. on lap 8 Traylor began pressuring Cater for second and on lap 9 took the spot with a inside pass out of turn 4.

The action in the top five was intense with Traylor trying several times for the lead. On lap 21 J.R. Guy began to work his way to fourth with passes on Wood and Jamerson.

With one to go Childress had Traylor all over his rear bumper pressuring him for the lead. Childress woull pick up the win with Traylor pushing him across the finish line in second. Rounding out the top five were Junior Carter, J.R. Guy and Roger Jamerson.

On several occasions Bowler would fend off challenges several times rubbing sheet metal in the process. On lap 18 Toole looked inside Bowler as they exited turn 4; the two raced side by side to turn 2 where they touched allowing Bowler to regain the lead. In turn 4 Toole would bring out the races final caution with a spin setting up a green, white, checkered finish.

Jamaica, VA – It had been a while since his last visit to Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway but Booper Bare of Rockbridge Baths, VA still knew how to get around the ½ mile speedplant in Jamaica, VA. A strong field of 44 cars showed up for the second visit by the Steel Block Bandits to Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway for the $3000 to win Firecracker 30. In what was a cautioned filled 30 event, Bare used his knowledge of the speedway to work the high side to perfection and get his first series win of 2011. Bare started on the outside of the front row. It didn’t take long before he was in the lead and setting the pace. Bare took over the top spot with a power move to the outside of Scott Adams out of turn 2 on lap 4. Once out front Bare showed his old VMS Championship form. Over the final 25 laps Bare had to endure multiple cautions that allowed several competitors to take shots at the lead. On multiple occasions Kyle Lear made attempts to get inside Bare only to be turned away each time. Lear tried several times over the final three laps to get inside Bare for the lead but Bare was too strong and would hold on to take the $3000 top prize in the Firecracker 30. “It feels really good to be back here in victory lane, this team worked extremely hard to fix the problems we were having with this car earlier today, if not for my crew I would not be standing here tonight,” commented bare in victory lane. Rounding out the top five were Derick Quade, Rick Hulson, Scott Adams and Andy Fries. In other action Brian Maxey of king George, VA picked up his fourth win of the season in the Budweiser Modifieds; Stephen Childress of St. Stephens Church, VA cruised to his second eature win in the truckin Thunder Sportman and in the Collision One Limited Stock Car feature Brett Adkins made it two in a row as well as setting a new division track record. In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Tony Quade and Page Harrison led the field to green with Harrison taking the point and leading the first lap. Behind Harrison the battle began to heat up between Quade and Brian Maxey. Maxey would take over the spot with Brandon Galloway and Dan Arnold working their way into third and fourth. The action for the top spot would heat up as Maxey began pressuring Harrison for the top spot. Several cautions closed the field on Harrison, each time he was up to the challenge and kept Maxey at bay. On lap 23 the door opened for Maxey when Harrison hit a rut in turn 2 allowing Maxey to get inside for the lead.
Jamaica, VA – It had been almost a year since Walker Arthur of Forest, VA had been in the starting field of a Victory Lap Late Model feature, but the 2008 Victory Lap Late Model and 2010 Steel Block Bandits champion still knows his way to victory lane as he held off a determined David Williams of Avenue, VA to take home the victory. Arthur led flag to flag but the win did not come without a challenge. Earlier in the night Williams had set a new division track record and pulled a six pill to invert the top six. It only took him eight laps to get to second and have Arthur in his sites. On lap 9 Arthur jumped the cushion allowing Williams to close as the two exited turn 2. On the next circuit Williams looked to the inside of Arthur out of turn 2 only to have Arthur close the door down the backstretch. The two then put on a driving clinic driving through lapped traffic with Williams taking a shot at Arthur at every corner. The two went three wide several times as they worked the slower traffic. On lap 25 Williams got into the back of Arthur out of turn 2 only to have Arthur hold on to the spot. On lap 32 the race third and final caution would fly setting up an eight lap dash for the win. On the restart Arthur was magnificent and pulled away by two car lengths as Williams worked to hold off Scott Adams for second. Arthur would go on to record his first victory at the speedway in over two years. “That was awesome, I saw Williams coming up through the field on the scoreboard and I knew I was going to have my hands full, to be able to get back here in victory lane at Virginia Motor Speedway is really special,” commented Arthur in Victory Lane. Rounding out the top five were David Williams, Scott Adams, Davis Lipscombe and Kenny Moreland. In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Joey Polevoy and Brian Dobie led the field to green with Polevoy taking control and leading the first lap. Behind him Dan Arnold and Brian Maxey begin their march to the front. During the races third caution Polevoy came to stop on front stretch with mechanical problems ending his night and handing lead to Maxey. On the restart Maxey pulled away with Page Harrison in tow. On lap 12 Arnold works his way back to third after falling back to seventh. On lap 21 caution would fly and close the field on Maxey’s bumper. On the restart Arnold tried the outside of Harrison but would get pinched against the backstretch wall allowing Brian Dobie and Tony Quade to get by for position. Maxey would have to endure one more restart but he had enough to hold off Harrison for his third win of 2011. Rounding out the top five were Page Harrison, Brian Dobie, Dan Arnold...

Traylor looked to be on cruise control as he held a sizable lead for the majority of the race. Behind him the battle for second was intense as Carter worked to hold off Roger Jamerson, Michael Roop and Wood. On lap 19 Wood would take second from Carter and set out to real in Traylor.

On lap 21 the races final caution would put Wood on Traylor’s bumper for the restart. Traylor would get a good jump on the field but Wood kept the pressure on and as the two headed to the white flag Wood dove under Traylor out of turn 4 only to Traylor hold on to the top spot. Traylor would go on to record his second victory of 2011. Rounding out the top five were Wood, Junior Carter, J.R. Guy and John Kirby.

Results for Truckin Thunder Sportsman are still unofficial, at the time of this release the motors of winner Todd Traylor and Tony Wood were being held for further inspection by track officials.

On lap the next lap fast qualifier Brett Adkins would spin and be relegated to the rear, a place he wouldn’t stay long. The battles all over the track were tight as Ender worked to keep the top spot. On lap 13 Adkins was back in second and knocking on the door for the lead.

On lap 14 Adkins blasted around the outside of Ender out of turn 2 and down the backstretch to take over the lead. Over the remaining laps Adkins would pull away and cruise to his first win of 2011. Rounding out the top five were Joe Ender, Brandon Coates, Thomas Rose and Brandon Sandridge.

Jamaica, VA – Mother Nature tired to put a damper on Armed Forces Appreciation Night at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway but track officials had other ideas getting the track in racing condition with the help of the competitors on hand. Once racing got under way the action got intense on a night that saw three first time winners. In the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA led every lap but it didn’t come easy as Scott Adams, David Williams and Derick Quade all took shots at Shelton for the lead. On lap 6 Williams worked high and low trying to find a way around Shelton. Several times over the next few laps Williams would get a fender inside Shelton but could never make the pass. Shelton would be able to get some breathing room as Adams went to work on Williams for the runner up spot. Williams would jump the cushion in turn 3 on lap 16 allowing Adams to take over the second spot. With the laps winding down Shelton held the top spot while Adams battled Derick Quade for second. With the battle behind him Shelton would go on to record his first ever win in the very competitive Victory Lap Late Models. “This is awesome, we have worked really hard to get to this point and to get a win in this very competitive division,” commented Shelton in victory lane. Rounding out the top five were Scott Adams, Derick Quade, David Williams and John Staton. In other action Curtis Barricks of Chesterfield, VA led every lap of the Budwesier Modified 25 lap feature to record his first ever victory in eight years of racing at Virginia Motor Speedway. The win didn’t come without a challenge as Josh Harris of Gloucester, VA made several attempts to take away the top spot without success. Harris would finish second followed by Lance Grady, Page Harrison and Dan Arnold. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature Tony Woods and Roy Skaggs would lead the field to green with Woods leading the first circuit. On lap 3 Stephen Childress and Todd Traylor would get past Skaggs for second and third respectfully. On lap 6 Childress would get inside Woods in turn 4 and take the lead at the line by inches. Once out front Childress began to build a comfortable lead. Woods would make several late race attempts at taking back the top spot but to no avail. The races final caution came out on lap 22 setting up a three lap dash for the cash of which Childress was up for the challenge as he went on to record his first ever victory in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman division. Wood, Traylor, Roger Jamerson and Michael Roop rounded out the top five. In the Collision One 20 lap nightcap Brandon Sandridge and Chad champion led the field to green.

Sandridge would briefly take the lead but would jump the cushion in turn 3 allowing Champion to get by and lead the first circuit. Champion’s lead was short lived as on the next lap Joe Ender would get inside Champion in turn 4 to take over the top spot.

Ender would quickly get company and Brett Adkins and Ryan Toole pulled up on his back bumper trying to force an error on Enders part. With battles all over the track all eyes seemed focused on the top spot as Adkns began to pressure Ender of the lead. Adkins made several attempts for the lead and each time Ender held him off. The last attempt came on the final lap as Adkins looked to have a good run off turn 4 to get inside Enders only to have Enders hold on to the victory. rounding out the top five were Adkins, Toole, Wesley Givens and Ricky Douglas.
