A strong field of 44 cars showed up for the second visit by the Steel Block Bandits to Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway for the $3000 to win Firecracker 30. In what was a cautioned filled 30 event, Bare used his knowledge of the speedway to work the high side to perfection and get his first series win of 2011.

Bare started on the outside of the front row. It didn’t take long before he was in the lead and setting the pace. Bare took over the top spot with a power move to the outside of Scott Adams out of turn 2 on lap 4. Once out front Bare showed his old VMS Championship form. Over the final 25 laps Bare had to endure multiple cautions that allowed several competitors to take shots at the lead.

On multiple occasions Kyle Lear made attempts to get inside Bare only to be turned away each time. Lear tried several times over the final three laps to get inside Bare for the lead but Bare was too strong and would hold on to take the $3000 top prize in the Firecracker 30.

“It feels really good to be back here in victory lane, this team worked extremely hard to fix the problems we were having with this car earlier today, if not for my crew I would not be standing here tonight,” commented bare in victory lane.

Rounding out the top five were Derick Quade, Rick Hulson, Scott Adams and Andy Fries.

In other action Brian Maxey of king George, VA picked up his fourth win of the season in the Budweiser Modifieds; Stephen Childress of St. Stephens Church, VA cruised to his second eature win in the truckin Thunder Sportman and in the Collision One Limited Stock Car feature Brett Adkins made it two in a row as well as setting a new division track record.

In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Tony Quade and Page Harrison led the field to green with Harrison taking the point and leading the first lap.

Behind Harrison the battle began to heat up between Quade and Brian Maxey. Maxey would take over the spot with Brandon Galloway and Dan Arnold working their way into third and fourth.

The action for the top spot would heat up as Maxey began pressuring Harrison for the top spot. Several cautions closed the field on Harrison, each time he was up to the challenge and kept Maxey at bay. On lap 23 the door opened for Maxey when Harrison hit a rut in turn 2 allowing Maxey to get inside for the lead.

Harrison could not recover to retake the top spot and Maxey would go on to record his fourth win of the season followed to the checkers by Harrison, Dan Arnold, Tony Quade and Travis LaRoque.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature Junior Carter and Tony Wood led the field to green with Wood taking the top spot. On lap 3 Stephen Childress made it three wide out of turn 2 splitting both Carter and Wood to take over the top spot.

Once out front Childress put it on cruise control going on to take his second win of 2011. Following Childress to the checkers were Roger Jamerson, John Kirby, Junior Carter and Wayne Carroll.

In the Collision One Limited Stock 20 lap feature it was Brandon Coates and Wesley Givens led the field to green with Givens leading the first lap followed by his father James Givens and sixth starting Brett Adkins in tow.

On the next lap Adkins rocketed around Givens out of turn 2 to take over the lead. Once out in front Adkins put it on cruise control as they battled for second behind him. The two Givens and Joe Ender put on a show for the fans on hand as Adkins pulled away.

No one had anything for Adkins as he cruised to his second win in a row followed by Joe Ender, James Givens, Wesley Givens and Brandon Coates rounding out the top 5.

Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway will take the weekend of July 16th off in preparation the inaugural visit by the Ultimate Super Late Model Series for the $10,000 to win Summer Heat 50.

ULTIMATE teams have been buzzing with discussion about this upcoming event. New championship leader Chip Brindle, riding the momentum of his Independence Shootout win at Cherokee Speedway, is just one of the many drivers who have this event circled as a must on their schedule. “The Georgia Bandit” Casey Roberts will be looking to rebound after a rare DNF in the Independence Shootout. Chris “Fergy Time” Ferguson, Ricky Weeks, Daniel Baggerly, Ross Bailes and “Kid Quick” Zack Mitchell are just a few of the drivers who will head north to battle for the $10,000 winner’s check and a total purse exceeding $35,000.

The driver’s from the South will have their hands full with a tough contingent of Mid-Atlantic hot-shoes. This is sure to turn into an epic North versus South event.

The night’s activities will also include the Victory Lap Late Model, Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Budweiser Modified and the Collision One Limited Stock Car divisions in Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series action.

Competitor gates for Saturday, July 23rd will open at 3pm with spectator gates opening at 4pm. On track activities will begin at 6pm with hot laps.

Divisions scheduled to race on Saturday July 23rd: Ultimate Super Late Models (50 Laps); Victory Lap Late Models (35 Laps); Truckin Thunder Sportsman (25 Laps); Budweiser Modifieds (25 Laps); and the Collision One Limited Stock Cars (20 laps). Ultimate Super Late Model Series will run qualifying, heats, B Main(s) and Feature. All track divisions will run Hot Lap Time Trials and Features.

Admission price for Adults $20, seniors (60+) $15; military $15, students 13 – 17 years old $8, children 7 – 12 years old $4 and children 6 and under admitted free. Pit passes for this special event will be $25.

The buzz about this weekend’s event continues to get louder with talk of a record car count for the touring series second visit to the speedway.

Some of the region’s top late model talent will for on hand for the Series return visit to the ½ mile speed plant in Jamaica, VA and will have to contend with a strong local contingent led by defending champion Scott Adams of Chester, VA, defending race winner Matt Marshall of Stuarts Draft, VA, Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA, Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA and rookie Kenny Moreland of Mechanicsville, MD.

Making the night even more exciting will be a huge belated 4th of July fireworks extravaganza that is sure to please the whole family.

A $25,000 prize is once again earmarked for the winner of the two-day blockbuster, which will offer a cash purse totaling over $125,000. The Commonwealth 100 will pay $2,000 to start, and a 30-lap Non-Qualifiers’ Race will boast a $3,000 first-place award from a purse of nearly $16,000.

Time trials and heat races will be run on Fri., April 15, with last-chance races and the headline Commonwealth 100 dominating the program on Sat., April 16. A rain date of Sun., April 17, has been established for the event.

Returning will also be the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series for the 32nd Annual USA 100 on Saturday, September 17th. This year’s event will once again pay the winner $15,000. The event will have a September 18th rain date. The event will also include a modified special with VMS rules.

Also returning for 2011 will be the Steel Block Bandits but this year the event will be a $3000 to win event scheduled for Saturday, July 9th. The Steel Block Bandits Limited Late Model Series holds events throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. The series will return with VMS alumnus and 2008 Victory Lap Late Model Champion Walker Arthur of Forest, VA as their 2010 Champion. The tracks Victory Lap Late Model competitors will once again offer up some stiff competition when the third year series makes its visit back to the high banks of Virginia Motor Speedway. Last year VMS rookie Matt Marshall of Stuarts Draft, VA picked up the biggest race win of his early career and the $2000 check. The track’s always competitive weekly divisions begin their race for the division Championships and the Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series Championship on Saturday April 23rd. This year’s division line-up will once again include the Victory Lap Late Models, Truckin Thunder Sportsman and the Collision One Limited Stock Cars.

The Speedway will hold an open practice for all divisions on Saturday, April 2nd from 9am till 5pm. Saturday, April 9th will be used as a rain date for the open practice. All cars must be inspected before they will be allowed to practice. Competitors are encouraged to register before the open practice.

Registrations are currently being accepted with the top twenty in each class having their number saved until February 15th when all numbers will become first come first served. Competitors can obtain a 2011 registration form by going to the tracks website or by calling the speedway Monday through Friday 10am through 3pm at (804) 758-1867.

The win didn’t come easy as Marshall had to fend off the advances of Scott Adams for much of the first half of the race and then held off Andy Fries over the final five laps, the last time out of turn 4 coming to the checkers.

It all began with six laps to go as Fries looked inside Marshall out of turn 4 with Marshall holding the lead by inches at the line. Each time in turn 2 Marshall would gain a car length and in turn 4 Fries would pull up beside him. The races final caution would come out on lap 29 setting up a one lap shootout. On the restart Marshall pulled two car lengths on Fries and the rest of the field. As the leaders headed into turn 3 Fries closed the gap and got under Marshall out of turn 4 heading to the checkers with Marshall taking the win by.100 second at the line.

“This is absolutely amazing to get my first late model race in such a big event. The car worked so well, I learned a lot tonight running up on the cushion,” commented Marshall in victory lane.

Rounding out the top five were Andy Fries, Sommey Lacey, Kyle Merkel and Walker Arthur. Heat race wins went to Scott Adams, Matt Marshall, Kyle Merkel and Andy Fries. B Main win went to Junior Carter.

In other action Brian Maxey of King George, VA picked up his third win of the season in the Budweiser Modifieds holding off Dan Arnold on the final lap. In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman Roger Jamerson of Mechanicsville, VA dove under the spinning leaders in turn 4 to pick up the victory and in the Collision One Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature Ryan Toole held off the challenges of Joe Ender to take his second victory of the 2010 season.

Virginia Motor Speedway regulars Scott Adams and Matt Marshall led the field to green with Marshall gaining control from the outside to lead the opening lap of the Revere Gas Firecracker 30 presented by Aaron’s. On the next circuit Adams dove inside Marshall out of turn 4 with Marshall holding on to the lead by inches at the line. The two raced side by side until caution came out for an altercation in turn two.

On the restart David Williams worked his way inside Kyle Merkel for the fourth. Williams wasn’t done as he quickly took over the third spot from Andy Fries on the next circuit. Caution would come out once again on lap 6 for a spin by Tom Cohick that collected four other competitors.

On the restart Merkel went to the high side to take back the third spot from Williams. Williams would rally to take back the spot but his night would come to an end with mechanicals woes on lap 12. On lap 15 Walker Arthur worked passed Merkel for fourth.

By lap 18 Marshall began to work heavy traffic with Adams and Fries battling for second behind him. On lap 18 Adams had dispatched of Fries and began closing in on Marshall. On lap 22 the races third caution came out for a spin in turn 2. On the restart Fries took over second from Adams in turn 3 with Merkel following to third.

On lap 24 Fries began to pressure Marshall for the lead taking a peak to his inside as the two raced out fo turn 4. Over the next five laps Marshall would gain in turn two with Fries pulling back to his inside out of turn four. On lap 29 with Marshall two cars lengths ahead of Fries and looking for the checkers caution came out for a three car accident in turn 4. That set up a one lap shootout for the win.

On the restart Marshall pulled ahead by two car lengths but that advantage disappeared in turn 3 as Fries pulled to Marshall’s inside. As the exited out turn four the tow were side by side with Marshall nipping Fries at the line by .100 of a second picking up the biggest race of his career. Behind the battle for the victory was a battle to take third between Merkel and Sommey Lacey with lacey taking the spot by inches at the line.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature Tim Shelton and Tony Wood led the field to green with Wood leading the first circuit. Wood looked in control for most of the event with Todd Traylor chasing him in second. Traylor made several attempts to get under Wood with no success as Roger Jamerson and Michael Roop battled behind them for third. On the last lap Traylor dove under Wood heading into turn 3 with the two making contact sending both spinning allowing Jamerson to get by an go on for the victory. Rounding out the top five were Michael Roop, Davey Pullen, Todd Traylor and J.R. Guy.

In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Brian Maxey and Charlie Hubbard led the field to green with Maxey leading the first circuit. Maxey pulled away from the field as Dan Arnold worked his way to second and began to chase down the leader.

On lap 14 Charlie Hubbard and Joey Polevoy battled for fifth as the leaders raced nose to tail. With battles all through the field Arnold kept pace with Maxey on each caution flag. The final caution came out with two to go. On the restart Arnold drove hard under Maxey in turn two but couldn’t make the pass and fell back two car lengths as Maxey went on to take his second win in a row and third of the season. Rounding out the top five were Dan Arnold, Page Harrison, Joey Polevoy and Lance Grady. Chris Arnold picked up the Pitts Lumber Rookie of the Race Award with a ninth place finish.

In the Collision One Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature Kevin Fletcher and Ryan Toole led the field to the green with Toole leading the first lap. Toole paced the field with Joe Ender, Fletcher, Marty Coaltrain and Bret Adkins all in tow.

Several cautions closed the field on Toole’s bumper but he was up to the challenge each time on each restart. Ender took one more shot at Toole on the final restart but couldn’t make the pass. Toole would go on to record his second win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Joe Ender, Kevin Fletcher, marty Coltrain and John Hankins Jr.

Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway will host Budweiser / WIGO Night at the Races next Saturday July 24th. All four Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series divisions will be in action featuring the Victory Lap Late Models, Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Budweiser Modified, Collision One Limited Stock Car divisions.

The night’s activities will also include the Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Budweiser Modifieds and the Collision One Limited Stock Cars in action.

Competitor gates for Saturday, July 24th will open at 3pm with spectator gates opening at 4pm. On track activities will begin at 6:30pm with hot laps. Divisions scheduled to race on Saturday July 24th: Victory Lap Late Models (35 Laps); Truckin Thunder Sportsman (25 Laps); Budweiser Modifieds (25 Laps); and the Collision One Limited Stock Cars (20 laps). All divisions will run Hot Lap Time Trials and Features.

Admission price for Adults $10, seniors $8; military $5, students 13 – 17 years old $7, children 7 to 12 years old $4 and children 6 and under admitted free.

To enhance the fans racing experience the speedway has installed a short wave FM transmitter and all of the evening’s action can be heard at 95.5 FM. So bring your portable radio headset and enjoy hearing all the action.

The series regulars, which will include the speedway’s 2008 Victory Lap Late Model Champion and current Bandits point leader Walker Arthur of Forest, VA, will have a tough road ahead of them as they will have to contend with a strong local contingent of VMS locals led by Stevie Long of Mechanicsville, MD, rookie Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA, Scott Adams of Chester, VA, Davis Lipscombe of Mechanicsville, VA, Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA and Ben Bowie of Brandywine, MD.
