“This is very disappointing but with the rain we have had overnight and the forecast for even more today we felt it best to get the word out early and save our fans and teams the expense of getting to us and then having to call it anyway,” commented track owner Bill Sawyer.

Sawyer added, “We will work with the Ultimate Series officials this coming week on a possible reschedule date that is suitable for the series and track.”

The speedway will return to racing Saturday June 1st for Truckin Thunder Scout Night presented by the Virginia Army National Guard and week four of Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series action. The night’s activities will include the 2nd Annual Truckin Thunder Dirtwood Nationals Pinewood Derby presented by the Virginia Army National Guard that will precede the action at the big track.

There will be three divisions of competition for the pinewood derby – Scouts, Fans and VMS competitors. Gates will open at 2pm for registration and the 2nd Annual Dirtwood Nationals will start at 3pm.

After the pinewood derby everyone is invited to stay for a night filled with exciting high octane, side by side dirt track racing and fireworks. All Scouts and Scout Masters in uniform will be admitted free in the grandstands.

See the Victory Lap Late Model / Fastrak Pro Late Model, Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Budweiser Modified and Collision One Limited Stock Car divisions in a special twin race format.

Competitor gates for Saturday, June 1st will open at 4pm with spectator gates opening at 5pm. On track activities will begin at 6:30pm with hot laps.

The 34th Annual USA 100 will now be contested on Saturday May 18th and be sanctioned by the Ultimate Super Late Model Series. The event will pay $10,000 to win and continue with the fan friendly format of two twenty-five lap qualifying races to make it into the fifty lap “A” main.

“The USA 100 is one of the longest running late model events in the country and we felt it was important to keep the tradition going; after discussions with Ernie Shelton the owner of the USA 100 and Stan Lester of the Ultimate Super Late Model Series a deal was struck to bring it back for 2013,” commented track owner Bill Sawyer.

The USA 100 will take the place of the previously scheduled Ultimate Super Late Model sanctioned Mid-Atlantic Spring Championship on Saturday May 18th. This will be the third year that the series has sanctioned an event at the ½ mile speed plant.

“It’s an honor to be a part of one of the county’s longest running races. I appreciate Ernie Shelton, Bill Sawyer and the staff of Virginia Motor Speedway for intrusting the Ultimate Super Late Model Series with sanctioning this time honored event; I look forward to many successful years ahead,” commented Stan Lester Owner and Founder of the Ultimate Super Late Model Series.

This will be the eighth year that the USA 100 will be contested at Virginia Motor Speedway. In the previous seven years there has yet to be a repeat winner. Ernie Shelton, with sanctioning from the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series (MACS), first brought the event to the speedway in 2006.

“This takes us back to our roots by having a regional touring series sanction the event and I looking forward to working with the Ultimate Super Late Model Series this year; as I have stated in the past the perfect home for the USA 100 is and will always be Virginia Motor Speedway,” commented Ernie Shelton.

“I have to thank the Sawyer’s for supplying us with a track you can race on, you could go anywhere on the track and pass cars, I just love coming to this place,” commented a very elated Shaver in victory lane.

Jeremy Miller and Chris Madden led the field to green with Miller taking the top spot and the lead out of turn 2. Miller looked to be untouchable as he pulled away from the field and began lapping slower cars by lap 8.

On lap 12 Madden had to hold off Dale McDowell for second as they worked through lapped traffic. In Lap 16 McDowell got inside off Madden out of turn 2, as they raced back into three Steve Shaver made it three wide coming out of turn 4 to take third. On a lap 21 restart Shaver got inside McDowell for second and set out to catch Miller.

By lap 29 Shaver had caught Miller and began pressuring him for the lead. Several times he would get inside Miller but each time Miller would hold on to the spot. On lap 35, with the lead duo working lapped traffic, Shaver got inside Miller coming out of turn 4 and nipped Miller for the lead at the line. Miller would rocket back to the lead in turn 1 with Shaver in close pursuit.

On lap 46 Shaver began testing the outside of Miller and on each successive lap would pull alongside to challenge for the lead. On lap 48 shaver dove it in deep in turn 1 and when the two exited turn 2 Shaver had pulled off the pass for the lead and would go on to score the $10,000 victory.

Rounding out the top five were Jeremy Miller, Dale McDowell, Rick Eckert, and Jamie Lathroum.

Heat race wins went to Chris Madden, Jeremy Miller, Jamie Lathroum and Chris Ferguson. B Main win went to Ricky Elliott.

In other action the speedway had two first time winners as Chris Arnold of Petersburg, VA led flag to flag for his first win in the Budweiser Modified division and junior Carter of Mechanicsville, VA held off Todd Trayor of King William, VA for his first Truckin Thunder Sportsman victory.

In the Budweiser Modified 25 feature Chris Arnold of Petersburg, VA led flag to flag for his career first win at Virginia Motor Speedway. Behind him current point leader brian Dobie and former track champion Brett Hamilton put on a show for the fans racing side by side for second for ten laps. Dobie would take second by inches at the line over Hamilton with Page Harrison and defending track champion Dan Arnold rounding out the top 5. Donnie Smith was the Pitts Lumber Rookie of the Race with his ninth place finish.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature Junior Carter and Davey Pullen led the field to green with Carter controlling the top spot. On lap 11 Todd Trayor got past Pullen for second and began to reel in the leader. On lap 18 Traylor began applying pressure for the lead looking inside Carter at every corner. Each time Carter was up to the task and the laps wound down. With the fans on their feet Traylor pushed Carter for all he was worth only to come up short as Carter would take his career first Sportsman win with Traylor glued to his bumper. Rounding out the top five were Stephen Childress, Brett Adkins and Taylor Doggett. Brett Adkins was the Pitts Lumber rookie of the Race with his fourth place finish.

The speedway will take the weekend of May 26th off and return to racing Saturday June 2nd with week five of Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series action. Steve Shaver of Vienna, WV took over the top spot on lap 20 with an outside pass of Jamie Lathroum out of turn 2. Lathroum tried several times to get back past Shaver for the lead but each time Shaver help on to the spot and would go on to take the victory in the inaugural Summer Heat 50 and collected the $10,000 check.

“I know what the staff here at VMS is doing to get such a great track in temperatures like we had today but keep it up,” commented Shaver in victory lane.

Following Shaver to the checkers were Jeremy Miller, Jamie Lathroum, Casey Roberts and Jonathan Davenport.

In other action Scott Adams of Chester, VA took home his second win of the season in the Victory Lap Late Models; in the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Travis LaRoque of Newburg, MD picked up his first victory; in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature

Ross Bailes and Casey Roberts led the field to green with Bailes leading the first lap. On lap 2 Jamie Lathroum dove inside Bailes out of turn 4 and would take the lead by inches at the line. On lap five the race would encounter two caution flags, each restart Lathroum would choose the inside and keep the lead once under green.

On lap 6 Davenport got by Shaver for second and looked to be headed to the front but jumped the cushion on lap 10 and lost a bit of momentum. Davenport would gather it back up and reel in Lathroum and on lap 16 got to the outside to take the lead out of two. the lead was short lived as Lathroum battled back in turn 3 with the two making contact and Lathroum coming out with the lead and Shaver following to second.

Caution would come out on lap 19 when Ricky Elliott came to a stop in turn 3. On the restart Lathroum chose to start on the inside with Shaver to his outside. As the two raced into turn one Shaver powered around the outside of Lathroum and the two went door to door with Shaver taking the lead by inches at the line.

Lathroum stayed on the inside of Shaver as the two raced side by side for the next two laps before Shaver would finally secure the top spot. On lap 31 Jeremy Miller began looking inside Lathroum for second. On lap 34 Miller finally took second and worked to reel in the leader.

Shaver would keep a couple of car lengths between himself and Miller and would go on to take the checkers over Miller, Lathroum, Casey Roberts and Davenport.

In the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature Scott Adams of Chester, VA got inverted to the pole of the feature with Derick Quade of Mechanicsville, MD to his outside and leading the field to green. Adams would lead the first lap followed closely by Quade, Davis Lipscmobe, Anthony Kincaid and Walker Arthur.

On lap 3 caution would come out for David Williams who suffered a flat tire and came to rest in turn 3. On the restart Quade would look inside Adams for the lead only to be turned away. The car on the move was Tim Shelton as he had worked his way to fifth from his fourteenth place starting position.

On the restart Adams and Quade went back to battling for the lead, every time Adams was up to the task and would hold on to the top spot. On alp 17 David Williams would his way back into the top five and went to working on Kincaid for fourth.

Williams quickly made his way to third and began a battle with Quade for second. While the Quade worked to keep Williams behind him for second Adams began to pull away and work lapped traffic.

With the battle behind him Adams would go on to get his second win of the season followed by Derick Quade, David Williams, Davis Lipscombe and Anthony Kincaid to the checkers.

In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature John Ferguson and Bret Hamilton led the field to green with Hamilton leading the first lap.

With all the action behind him Hamilton pulled away to a full straight lead. For the first fifteen laps the only thing to slow Hamilton were two cautions. On the restart on lap 15 Hamilton pulled away again with Page Harrison, John Ferguson, Brian Maxey and seventeenth starting Travis LaRoque battling for second.

On lap 19 Maxey worked inside Harrison in turn 2 as the two exited the corner they made contact with Maxey taking over second and Harrison falling back to third. On the next lap caution would come out when Maxey went for a spin in turn 1 with help from Harrison.

It would be Hamilton leading the last five laps and crossing under the checkers first for what was to be his first win of the season at VMS. But after crossing the scales Travis LaRoque was declared the winner when Hamilton came up light. Rounding out the top five were Brandon Galloway, Jimmy Duncan and Wayne Barricks.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature Junior Carter and Todd Traylor would lead the field to green with Carter leading the first circuit. Walker Arthur quickly made his way to second and began pressuring Carter for the lead. Walker tried high and low trying to find away around Carter for the lead.

On lap 18 Arthur peeked to Carter’s inside as they headed into turn 1 and then he whipped it to the outside and pulled along side Carter in turn 2. Down the backstretch Arthur wrestled the lead away and then never looked back to go on to the victory. Rounding out the top five were Junior Carter, John Kirby, Todd Traylor and Michael Hayes.

In the Collision One Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature nightcap Brandon Sandridge and Thomas Rose led the field to green. Two cautions would come out for wrecks by Joe Ender and then a multi car pileup in turn four before one lap could be completed.

Once under green Sandridge would lead the races first lap followed closely by Wesley Givens and James Givens.

On lap 9 Brett Adkins joined the battle for second and went outside James Givens in turn 2 and inside Wesley Givens in turn 3 to take the spot. On lap 10 the battle for the lead got intense as Sandridge, Adkisn and the two Givens traded paint for the top spot. On lap 12 Adkins, who started sixteenth, took over the top spot, a postion he would not give up as he went on to record his third win in a row. Rounding out the top five were James Givens, Wesley Givens, David Bowler and Ryan Toole.

Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway will take the weekend of July 30th off and return to action Saturday August 6th and host Pepsi, WXGM Night featuring four divisions of Virginia Army National Guard Dirt Series action. New championship leader Chip Brindle, riding the momentum of his Independence Shootout win at Cherokee Speedway, is just one of the many drivers who have this event circled as a must on their schedule. “The Georgia Bandit” Casey Roberts will be looking to rebound after a rare DNF in the Independence Shootout. Chris “Fergy Time” Ferguson, Ricky Weeks, Daniel Baggerly, Ross Bailes and “Kid Quick” Zack Mitchell are just a few of the drivers who will head north to battle for the $10,000 winner’s check and a total purse exceeding $35,000.

The driver’s from the South will have their hands full with a tough contingent of Mid-Atlantic hot-shoes. This is sure to turn into an epic North versus South event.

Virginia Motor Speedway is pulling out all the stops to draw every Late Model in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast by offering tow money to any driver not making the 26 car field.
